Kayaking around Lake Malawi
At the end of October 2011 I set off from Botswana with my kayak strapped to the roof on my golf and the paddle sticking out of the window. My destination, Lake Malawi also known as Lake Nyassa.
After a few days drive I reached the lake shore at Senga Bay. This was to be my starting point. I camped at a delightful little spot which I highly recommend called Cool Runnings.
My first day at the Lake was delightful. The water was like glass. I remember thinking how ideal. Paradise. None of the eight meter waves I'd read of.A had a smile on my face bigger than any Cheshire cat. Later that night such an offshore storm kicked off that the waves crashing on the beach sounded like thunder. The walls of the little room I was staying in quite literally shook. I lay there and thought to myself, you are going to be paddling in that, into the total unknown. Three african countries border the lake. The rainy season is soon to start. You can't even do an eskimo roll!
I had worked out that to circumnavigate the lake in forty five days or less I would have have to kayak between thirty and forty five kilometers a day. Close to a marathon each day. My first day on the water I complete twelve kilometers, but I also only set off after 2pm. The weather or rather the waves were still pretty horrendous. Or so I thought.
My first camp was in a quite little corner, rocks bordering me on the one side and a big bed of common reeds behind. Little sign of other human life as it was a pretty inaccessable other than by water............ I will be updating this blog over the course of time
